Interviewee: Adam Webb – Trainee Quarry Supervisor

What inspired you to apply for our Trainee Programme?

In my previous job there wasn’t any opportunity for progression. When I saw this role advertised online, I felt it would give me room to develop and push myself. That was a key reason why I decided to go for it.

What skills or knowledge have you developed during your first year on the programme?

I’ve developed management skills, especially around dealing with different characters on site. I’ve also gained a better understanding of the equipment, the plants, and how the whole operation works.

How have you found the experience of studying for the Level 4 MPQC qualification alongside your role?

The studying tied in well with the day-to-day job. What I did each day helped provide evidence for the qualification, so it was a good combination.

What has been the highlight of your trainee journey so far?

Working with different individuals, learning new skills, interacting with customers, and getting to know colleagues better.

Where do you see your career progressing over the next five years?

Now that I’ve completed my qualification, I’m aiming to take on the role of Quarry Supervisor. I’ll also keep an eye out for any other opportunities to progress further in the business.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining our Trainee Programme?

I’d say go for it! I’ve had opportunities here that I didn’t have in my previous job. It opens doors and helps you make more connections.

Trainee asphalt multi skilled operative – programme overview

Our internal training programme provides structured development across all areas of asphalt production and plant operations. It combines practical, on-site learning with guided support from experienced mentors, giving trainees a clear understanding of how an asphalt plant functions and how different operational tasks connect.

  • Safely operate and inspect fixed and mobile plant
  • Assist with batching and the production of asphalt materials
  • Carry out daily checks, cleaning, greasing, and basic maintenance
  • Manage raw materials and support stock control
  • Use site systems such as the weighbridge, Epicor, and Podfather
  • Understand health, safety, and environmental requirements
  • Communicate effectively with the wider site team and customer‑facing staff

These learning areas help trainees build a broad, practical understanding of the operational environment.

Programme outcome

By the end of the programme, trainees will have developed:

  • Competence in core asphalt plant operations
  • Mobile plant certifications and practical technical skills

Working with a great team and being part of achieving record production levels.

How do you see your career progressing over the next five years?
I see myself building my skills further and eventually running shifts on my own.

Which part of your role do you find the most rewarding?

I’ve always been curious about asphalt and how it’s made.

Ellis Smith

What motivated you to apply for our training programme?
I was motivated by both my uncles being in the industry, so I wanted to try it for myself and see how I got on.

What skills or knowledge have you developed since starting your role?
I’ve learned how to operate a telehandler and a loading shovel, how to batch asphalt, and I’ve gained a much better understanding of what goes into producing asphalt.

What has been the highlight of your experience so far?
Learning how to batch asphalt, working with a great team, and being part of producing the figures we’ve achieved this year.

How do you see your career progressing over the next five years?
Over the next five years, I’d like to work my way into a supervisory role or manage a team, like Lee and Ben at Swansea Bay.

Which part of your role do you find the most rewarding?
Speaking with customers and knowing they’re happy with the material we’re producing.

What made you choose this industry or career path?
My family works in the industry, so I already had some knowledge from them, which encouraged me to get involved too.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining our training programme?
I’d recommend it. It’s a really good apprenticeship, and one of the best parts is seeing customers happy with what they receive. It can be challenging when the plant breaks down, and you have to fix things, but it’s rewarding when everything is back up and running smoothly.
